Past & Curious is a curated programme for schools, offering activities that can be adapted to suit different group sizes and learning needs.
At Chinatown Heritage Centre (CHC), we provide an educational gateway into the past where students will explore Chinatown’s historical narratives and gain deeper insights into the lives, struggles, and contributions of early immigrants in Singapore.
Through these experiences, students reflect and develop key competencies such as resilience, responsibility, critical thinking, collaboration, and active citizenship.

CURRICULUM CONNECTIONS
MOE CHARACTER AND CITIZENSHIP EDUCATION (CCE)
Through stories of everyday life in 1950s Chinatown, students can explore identity, relationships and choices in the context of Singapore’s past. As they encounter the experiences of families, workers and different communities, they can learn about the challenges people faced, consider the choices they made and understand the circumstances that shaped their lives. These stories provide opportunities to reflect on values such as respect, resilience, responsibility and care for others, while developing a greater appreciation of Singapore’s multicultural society and their role as members of the community.
MOE SOCIAL STUDIES (SS)
Chinatown Heritage Centre allows students to explore themes from MOE Social Studies, including identity, communities, diversity and Singapore’s past. Through our exhibits, students can discover how people lived and worked in the past, and learn about the experiences and contributions of early settlers. They can also compare past and present living conditions, consider how people lived and interacted, and reflect on how their own lives today may be different from those of people in the past. Exhibits about food, traditional practices and heritage brands can further support students in exploring how cultural traditions and everyday practices have been preserved, adapted and carried into life today.
CHINESE LANGUAGE (CL)
The stories, objects and everyday settings at Chinatown Heritage Centre provide opportunities for students to explore Singapore’s history and heritage through the experiences of its Chinese community. Students can discover the traditions and cultural practices of Singapore’s Chinese community, while learning Chinese vocabulary and expressions related to daily life, occupations, family and community. Using Chinese in a real-world setting can also build students’ confidence in using the language beyond the classroom. Students can also consider how these traditions have contributed to Singapore’s multicultural identity. Mandarin tours are also available, allowing students to engage with the stories and heritage throughout their visit.
IB PRIMARY YEARS PROGRAMME (PYP)
Our learning journeys can also be connected to inquiry-based and concept-driven approaches such as the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP). Through recreated environments and real-world experiences, children can explore concepts such as Change, Connection, Form, Function and Perspective. They can observe how homes, occupations and everyday life have changed, consider how people and communities are connected, investigate what objects are and how they were used, and begin to understand that people may experience the same place or period of history in different ways. Through observation, discussion and exploration, children can make meaningful connections between the past, their own experiences and the world around them.
