The Chinatown Heritage Centre is the only local attraction in Singapore where you can get an authentic experience of Chinatown’s evolution over time.
Walk into an immersive 1950s Singapore, spanning three levels that transport you from past to present. As an cultural offering curated by the Singapore Tourism Board, we’re proud to be recognised as a must-see attraction for tourists exploring the country’s history.
Zone 1
What it’s like to live in a shophouse
Step into a reproduction of a 1950s Chinatown shophouse and see how work and home blended into a single space for the early immigrants. Every item reveals a story, especially for the range of interesting tenants who used to rent the rooms.
You can see the daily routines and rhythms behind the iconic wooden shutters, from a traditional tailor shop to the open air kitchens, stairwells and traditional toilets we no longer see today.
Zone 2
Arrival & Settling into Singapore
Our Chinatown museum offers both immersive exhibits and video screenings describing the migration of early forefathers’- from Nanyang to Singapore. Trace the challenges they faced and uncover the opportunities, and see how they built a new world from scratch.
But not everything was about work. Discover forms of entertainment and services available after work- including a traditional Chinese opera set and a genuine mobile cinema on wheels - the very same one that children and adults used to peek into to see films and cartoons!
Zone 3
Migrants' End & Heritage Brands
In this zone, you confront the rarely seen – the quiet and sobering spaces of Death Houses, where the ill waited out their final days. You’ll also discover the roots of remedies we still use today and learn about the origins of brands with a longstanding heritage in Chinatown like Eu Yan Sang, Lim Chee Guan.
Explore how early settlers saw to both their bodies and spirits, and what nourishment they used, from cures to customs.

Joined the "Under One Roof" character-led tour with Ernest and enjoyed it tremendously! Informative and fascinating. It certainly felt like we had stepped into a shophouse in the mid 1950s with one of the tenants sharing about his life and his neighbours.
