The national flower of Singapore, the Vanda Miss Joaquim, is an orchid. Singapore has been a center of orchid breeding from the 1930s. Some early hybrids have left important footprints in the world of orchids and have become part of Singapore’s floral heritage.

Orchid diplomacy serves as a gesture of friendship to promote goodwill. It plays an important role in building bilateral ties. Many visiting heads of states have been presented with orchid hybrids named after them since 1956. There are more than 200 orchids named after dignitaries to date.
